With only a few weeks left of term before the summer holidays, I am confident that many parents are looking forward to the break from having to attempt to homeschool.  However, that hasn’t stopped the team at Ordinary Magic to do some research into some of the best apps out there, to support your child’s learning at home.  These apps are fun AND educational, which means that if you wish to, your children could enjoy these apps during the summer holidays.

Educational apps for children are not only great for their learning, they are also great for their mental health encouraging a sense of positivity and engagement.  They are also great for children to keep their mind active and stimulated, resulting in children feeling less lethargic and more encouraged.

Teach your Monster to Read

Teach Your Monster to Read has been made completely free due to school closures across the world (normally costs £4.99).  You can download this app or use on the computer.  The app consists of phonics learning and games, complete with monsters to help your child along the way.  Allow your child to create a monster and take it on a journey across the lands, facing phonics and reading tasks along the way.  I would suggest this app is more for KS1 children who are beginning to learn to read, however is open to all primary school ages.

Hopster

We’ve used Hospter for Missy who is now 6 years old since she was 4.  It is great fun for her and her younger brother who is now 3. Hopster is an educational app offering games, books and plentiful learning resources for preschoolers.  What’s great about this app is that it also contains lots of learning entertaining shows and music on top of everything it offers.  Hopster is extending its Free 7 day trial to 30 days which is a fabulous deal in this current climate, with plenty of parents searching out the latest educational apps that are low on cost (available for a short time only).

Duolingo

This is a great app for learning a new language, or for your children to continue learning a language they have started at school.  It’s free to download and although you can open up the app further via a small cost, it’s very useable using just the free version.  If you do wish to purchase Duolingo Plus, then the app becomes ad free.  The app allows you to create sentences and pick out works with sentences that the app has also created.  You can earn points for correct answers, race against the clock and even level up, so very rewarding.

Time Table Rock Stars

TTRockStars was first introduced to us through the kids school.  As the title of the app suggests, this app is all about learning your time tables, and can be done via your own avatar, a rock star!  The kids have to complete time table challenges to earn rewards.  These rewards can then purchase items for their avatar, including clothing, accessories etc.  My eldest has been using this via his school log in, and enjoys it, especially as he can see his friends on the points chart to see who has the most rewards!

The cost of this app for families is £6 per year, and at the moment, they are offering complete FREE access for all schools who are closed due to the current circumstances.   So if you currently do not have access via your child’s school, drop them an email to find out how!

Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is a great app for getting the kids to learn about reading, building up essential phonics and literacy skills.  The app suggests that with just 15 minutes of use per day, can really help improve your child’s reading.  My kids love to read, so this is really important to us, and for them currently being off school.  I think if children can read every day, as little or as much as they like, will definitely help their learning and educational development.  Reading Eggs have currently extended their FREE trial to 2 weeks!  This means that users can get 2 weeks worth of Reading Eggs completely free before any charges are incurred.  The cost of Reading Eggs after the Free trial starts at £3.99 but there are various packages to chose from.

Hit The Button

Hit the Button from Top Marks was recommended to us from my kids school.  This app is priced at £2.99 and is a maths app for children aged 5-11 years old.  It offers fun maths games and challenges, including quick fire questions, number bonds, multiplications and various other tasks.  It’s fun to use and gets the kids minds working for a short while!

Brain Pop

Brain Pop app is a learning resource offering various subjects such as History, English, Maths and Science.  The app offers various sub apps which can be chosen dependent on your child’s age and interests.  It is used across many schools in America and is very popular!
