Roots and Wings – Helping Families Grow Strong Together

Whether you're navigating a tough time, adjusting to a significant life change, or simply want to feel more connected to your community, we're here to walk alongside you.

Our support is graduated based on your needs. We facilitate access to local services, offer advice and support you to make referrals. When things get overwhelming we can help with specialist services, such as:

  • Domestic abuse
  • Sleep support
  • Parenting support

Every family is different, and so is our approach – warm, understanding, and always tailored to you.

Here When You Need a Bit Extra

Family life can be full of ups and downs – and sometimes, we all need a little help to steady the ship. Our Family Empowerment offer is here to help you work through whatever challenges you’re facing, whether it’s relationship breakdowns, routines that just aren’t working, struggles with your child’s behaviour, or everything feeling a bit overwhelming.

We take time to listen without judgement, understand what’s going on at home, and work with you to facilitate a plan that feels realistic and right for your family. That might include regular check-ins, linking you with local services, supporting with forms or referrals, or simply being a calm, consistent presence during a difficult time.

You don’t have to go through it alone – we’re here to walk alongside you and help your family find its rhythm again.

IDVA domestic violence support

Domestic Violence Support – You Are Not Alone

Living with or recovering from domestic abuse can leave deep emotional wounds – for children, parents, and the whole family. At Roots and Wings, we provide safe, specialist support for families affected by domestic violence, whether you're still in the situation, navigating a separation, or dealing with the impact it’s had overtime.

Our team includes therapists, counsellors, family empowerment workers, and our specialist IDVAs (Independent Domestic Violence Advisors) who are trained to support both children and adults through the emotional, practical and safety challenges that come with domestic abuse. We understand the lasting impact trauma can have, and we’re here to help you rebuild stability, confidence and trust – at your own pace.

For professionals:

We’re proud to be part of the Connected Care Network, which brings together local services working together to offer joined-up, wraparound support – so families don’t have to go through this alone or keep retelling their story.

Our REALationships Project is for children and young people at risk of exploitation, unhealthy relationships and/or experiences of domestic violence/abuse. Professionals can make referrals for anyone living in the City of Birmingham, who is at risk of exploitation, unhealthy relationships and/or experiences of domestic violence/abuse.

We run the REALationships Project in Solihull where it also includes additional specialised sexual health support (Umbrella certified)

Please complete our referral form – we’re here, and we’ll meet the family with compassion, not judgement.

For families:

We also work alongside and in partnership with brilliant charities such as Women’s Aid. If you or a family member is already receiving support through them, we’re here to complement that help – not replace it. We’re able to offer additional counselling and therapeutic support, when and where it’s needed, in full collaboration with Women’s Aid and other trusted organisations. Support is available for the whole family –from 1:1 therapy to parenting support, practical advice, and safe spaces for children to begin healing. Get in touch.

"I just wanted to start by saying a massive thank you for listening to me, actually hearing me and believing me. I think it’s the first time someone has truly got it.

I feel validated for the first time in a very long time!"

Groups/ Workshops and Drop-in Activities for Parents

Groups, Drop-ins & 1:1 Support – Find Your People, Find Support

At Roots and Wings, we know that sometimes the best support comes from being around others who just get it. That’s why we offer a wide range of groups, drop-ins, and online workshops for parents, carers, and families – all designed to help you feel less alone and more supported.

You’ll find everything from family support groups, SEND-inclusive Stay and Plays, and issue-based sessions (like anxiety, self-harm, or behaviour) to parenting programmes, coffee drop-ins, and practical workshops covering topics like sleep, routines, transitions, and emotional regulation. Some sessions are informal and friendly, others are more focused and structured – but all are designed to give you a safe space to learn, share, and feel empowered.

If group spaces aren’t right for you, or you’d prefer a bit more privacy, we also offer bookable 1:1 support sessions with our experienced team. These are ideal if you need tailored advice, emotional support, or just someone to talk things through with.

You can explore and book onto all of our upcoming groups/support sessions at Class for Kids booking site.

If you're not sure what’s right for you, just get in touch and we’ll help you find your fit.

Supporting Parents to Support Their Children’s Mental Health

When your child is struggling with their mental health, it can feel overwhelming, isolating, and sometimes even frightening. You may be unsure what to say, how to help, or where to turn next. At Roots and Wings, we’re here to support you, so that you can better support them.

We offer dedicated help for parents and carers whose children are experiencing anxiety, low mood, emotional distress, self-harm, or behavioural changes linked to mental health. Our team provides practical strategies, emotional support, and space to talk openly, without fear of judgement or blame.

Whether it’s through 1:1 support, parenting programmes, signposting to the right services, or just having someone in your corner – we’ll walk alongside you, helping you feel more confident, connected, and informed. Because your wellbeing matters too – and strong support at home can make a powerful difference.

If you're looking for help in supporting your child’s mental health, please complete our referral form – we’re here to listen and guide, not to judge.

SEND Support

Finding out your child has additional or special educational needs can bring a mix of emotions – from love and determination, to worry, grief, frustration, and overwhelm.  We offer compassionate, non-judgemental support to help you understand your child’s needs, navigate the SEND system, and advocate with confidence. Whether you're just beginning to explore what your child might need, or you're already deep in the world of EHCPs, diagnoses and appointments, we’ll meet you where you are – with warmth, expertise, and practical advice.

We’re proud to work alongside some amazing local partners across Solihull, including Super SEN, Liberty Circle, Solihull Parent Carer Voice, North Solihull Additional Needs Support Group, The Connected Care Network, and many more. Together, we aim to create a joined-up, inclusive community where families feel heard, empowered and never alone and get you the support you and your family deserve.

Our team can help you access the right services, build positive relationships with schools and professionals, and most importantly, feel more equipped to support your child in a way that works for your family. We’re also here to support you – because caring for a child with additional needs often means carrying a lot, and you deserve support too.

If you're looking for guidance, reassurance, or just someone to walk the SEND journey with you, please complete our referral form – you don’t have to do this on your own.

Need help quickly? We have a menu of paid-for counselling and therapy services

Ordinary Magic exists to support children, young people and families when faced with life’s most challenging moments. Sometimes this means that one-to-one therapy or counselling may be the most suitable next step. Whatever the need - mental health, trauma, or bereavement - our qualified, trained and experienced professionals will tailor their approach.

Every child we support through 10 weeks of counselling costs £1,100. We ask that, for those who can, parents and carers contribute a £10 per session donation to help us provide their child's assessment, 1:1 sessions and ongoing supervision.

Your donation of £120 will ensure a match with one of our professionals within 4–6 weeks and you will be supporting our work in the community. Please contact Michelle to find out more.
